Anthony Henday Noise
A major item the Blackburne Creek Board of Directors is working on is voicing our concerns to our MLAs and City Councillors regarding the increased noise in our community. We sent out an inquiry to members in the summer 2008, and we have identified that approximately 200 individuals confirmed that traffic noise is an issue, and that they would like us to talk to our representatives to identify some options.
In August, Blackburne Creek Homeowners' Association President Kathleen Edwards appeared before a City Council committee as it examined what to do about noise caused by the Henday. City Council eventually got Mayor Mandel to write to Premier Stelmach to complain. Please see this story carried in the Edmonton Sun.
On September 21 homeowners' association President Edwards, Vice President Grant Ainsley and a representative from Terwilliger met with MLA Dave Hancock to discuss the issue. While there are no easy answers and no solutions, Hancock did promise to take up the issue with Transportation MInister Luke Ouellette and also promised to see if he could arrange a meeting between Ouellette and concerned residents, including those from Blackburne Creek.
Many of the residents in other communities indicate that they are also suffering from the noise generated by the Anthony Henday. At a town hall meeting in October of 2008, which approximately 400 individuals attended and where MLAs were present, Mark Hablim shared his research which identified that this type of noise significantly affects property values, quality of life, Edmonton's general livability, and residents’ health and well being (see www.hendaynoise.com). Our goal is to convince the Alberta government and the City of Edmonton to erect noise barriers along specific sections of Anthony Henday Drive to reduce the noise. If the noise in our community is an issue to you, please go to the following site above and fill out the online petition. The site also gives you an opportunity to get involved in a more active way.
It is critical that you voice your concern to our elected officials – please either phone or write to your MLA Dave Hancock, as well as our city councilors, Don Iveson and Bryan Anderson. You might also consider writing a letter to the Minister of Transportation and cc MLAs and councilors.
